Organizing Your Writing
Steps to Follow:
1. Decide what your approach will be.
- When dealing with assigned
topics, determine your answer.
- Decide if the focus of your
essay will be persuasive, argumentative, expository,
entertainment, or expressive.
2. Develop ideas.
- Brainstorm for concrete
examples, evidence, anecdotes, and imagery.
- Construct your thesis sentence.
- Determine which bits of evidence
will best serve your approach, focus, and goal.
- Narrow the topic to fit the
allotted space.
3. Organize the paper. This is easy
when you view the essay as three separate components:
A. INTRODUCTION:
- Attention Getting Device
- Thesis Statement
- Organizational
Statement(Preview)
B. BODY:
- contains 3 to 5 substantial
paragraphs
- logical connections between the
paragraphs
- and transitional sentences.
C. CONCLUSION:
- Organizational Review
- Restate Thesis
- Concluding Remark/Tieback.

4. Revising the paper.
- Read the paper.
- Rethink the logical connections.
- Rewrite unclear, ambiguous, and
awkward phrasing.
- Edit for grammar, style, and
clarity.
- Proofread it Before you
hand it in.
