Organizing Your Writing
Steps to Follow:

1. Decide what your approach will be.

• When dealing with assigned topics, determine your answer.
• Decide if the focus of your essay will be persuasive, argumentative, expository, entertainment, or expressive.

2. Develop ideas.

• Brainstorm for concrete examples, evidence, anecdotes, and imagery.
• Construct your thesis sentence.
• Determine which bits of evidence will best serve your approach, focus, and goal.
• Narrow the topic to fit the allotted space.

3. Organize the paper. This is easy when you view the essay as three separate components:

A. INTRODUCTION:

• Attention Getting Device
• Thesis Statement
• Organizational Statement(Preview)

B. BODY:

• contains 3 to 5 substantial paragraphs
• logical connections between the paragraphs
• and transitional sentences.

C. CONCLUSION:

• Organizational Review
• Restate Thesis
• Concluding Remark/Tieback.
•  

4. Revising the paper.

• Read the paper.
• Rethink the logical connections.
• Rewrite unclear, ambiguous, and awkward phrasing.
• Edit for grammar, style, and clarity.
• Proofread it Before you hand it in.
