Components of a web page
Before you actually begin writing web pages in HTML, it is important that you understand the three components that make up a web page. Those components are: The head (or header), the body, and the content. Description and explanation of content practices will follow on a later page.
The Head
The head contains a number of critical elements which affect how the page is indexed by search engines and what information is available about the page to viewers. This information is contained between the two tags: <head> and </head> That information includes:
Therefore, your document Head will look like this (Comments in Blue are to assist you and should not be included in your coding):
<HTML> This tells the browser that
the material that follows is in HTML code and should be presented as such
<Head> Tells the
browser that the material between the <head> tags is not to be displayed
as content.
<meta name="Author"
content="Your name here"> This
makes it clear who authored this code.
<meta name="Key
Words" content="Words,
Describing, Content"> This provides terms
for search engines to index this page.
<meta name="Content"
content="A brief description">
<title>Your Title Goes
Here</title> Remember to use the
</ form of the tag to close commands!!!
</head> Tells
the browser that this is the end of the <head> material.
The Body
A document's body is composed of all the content that you, as the author, wish to include. The content in the body is set between the two <body> tags.
<body> Here is where your content will go. Content is put in place through the combination of tags and text. </body> This command signals the browser that this is the end of the body content.
</html> This tag closes the opening <HTML> tag and signals the browser that this is the end of that page.
