Questions about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Wizard of Oz
Directions: Choose four of the following questions and write a brief (3-5 body paragraph, argumentative) essay answering the question. If you have to ask me how long this should be; then, you are missing the entire point of what we’ve been discussing.
1. It is said that in times of strife, it is important for one to not think of their antagonist as a human being. How do Dahl and Adams illustrate the use of language to portray those outside the group as “other?”
2. How do these works portray men and women in traditional gender roles and why is that important for the meaning and power of the novels?
3. Both Charlie and Dorothy seem to be “incomplete”heroes as they need a group to complete their quests. Agree or disagree and explain. Also address the idea of the group as “faculty psychology.”

from both Oz and Chocolate Factory. Explain the importance of
each concept and example to the novel as a whole
5. Both Dahl and Adams’ lives influenced their writing. Provide examples from their lives which are reflected in their work.
6. Both books are filled with religious symbolism and allegory. Provide at least one example of such symbolism from each book and explain what you believe was to be the author’s intended message.
