Final Examination

Ok, so I've been sick and my memory is shot.  So as not to penalize you, the student, here are your two options.

You are to choose one of these two questions, and write a standard, fully developed [by my standards] three to five body paragraph essay (with full in-text citations and works cited page) essay to answer that question.  You are strongly encouraged to utilize, and properly cite, external research in your quest to impress me.  However, remember, I don't sleep much and I check every paper for plagiarism.  Don't be the example I use for the next class I teach, he said, with a sly smile.

1.  You were asked to choose and read one additional  Graphic Novel from the list we generated for this class.  Analyze that novel using ANY three of the major concepts we have addressed this semester.  You may, for example, choose to apply one of the ideas or concepts from our discussion of identity to the fact that "V" never reveals his "true" identity to his "love interest" as one of your three concept discussions if your book was Alan Moore's V for Vendetta.    Or if you chose to read The Filth, you could explore the book using the notions of narrative truth, narrative expectations, or meta-narrative for one of your points; while Post-Modernism would be ideal for one of the other two.

2.  Or, you may choose to do a similar process by choosing three concepts (one for each of your three points) and then exploring them with with concrete examples from books we have read in the class and your additional novel.  So, you could explore Aesthetic Violence further by looking at in in examples from Preacher, We3, and/or Dredd v. Batman.  For your second point you could explore the role of the unconscious in the creation of meaning in comics through symbols employed in Sandman, Death, or Swamp Thing.  Then for your third point you could demonstrate how this is all still just an example of the Gothic Romance/Horror genre at work using examples from Preacher, Sandman, Swamp Thing, or any of the books we've read.  These are just three examples of the way you can shape your question.  If you need help, email me...the best way is through murphyk@fvsu.edu ).

Have fun.  This is due, at the latest, with your portfolio on Tuesday, December 11, no later than 5:00 pm in CTM 105.
