Greetings! Now, pay attention and carefully read and follow these directions as there are actually TWO assignments here: ONE to complete in class today and turn in by 3:30 and one to have ready by the beginning of class on MONDAY.
ASSIGNMENT ONE: DUE BY END OF CLASS TODAY…TO BE WRITTEN IN THIS CLASSROOM.
Timed Essay Name:________________________
ENGL 1102
Murphy, Summer 2006
Directions: Choose one of the following four topics and write a three to five (body) paragraph essay addressing that topic. This essay is to be written in the classroom and is to take no longer than 90 minutes. Be sure to fully develop each body paragraph. Be sure to utilize standard grammar and punctuation. Correct spelling and proofreading are also expected. Take time with and show pride in your work.
Write legibly, in ink. Please double space so that I have room to write corrections and comments on your paper. You are expected to use a dictionary. Please do not use “white-out.” Once I have graded and returned your work, save this and all drafts of all papers you write in this class for your portfolio.
Finished essays should be turned in to my mailbox in the English office in room 248 of the Bond building. If you can’t find it, just ask for Ms. Sharpe’s office.
What do you believe are the chief reasons for students’ academic failure in college? Explain.
Students at public colleges currently pay, through tuition and fees, only one-fourth of the cost of their education, the rest is covered by taxpayers; however, some people say students should pay a greater share of the cost. Argue for or against the proposal.
Which courses did you avoid in high school do you now wish you had taken? Why?
Should college students have the complete freedom to choose their own courses? Discuss.
[write on your own paper and turn completed essay into Bond 238...take no longer than 90 minutes. You may write this in the WIN lab, Bond 124]
Assignment TWO
Directions: This is due at the beginning of class, Monday. You are to write a letter to the one person, who is NOT a family member, who has had the most influence upon your life. That person can be a teacher, coach, boy-scout leader, professor, director, mullah, news anchor, radio host, even your psychiatrist. Please do not write to your current boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse, or pets—living or dead—also no fictional characters, nor messiahs or prophets. Preferably write to somebody above ground and not living in Hell, Tupac and Biggie’s hide-out, or the North Pole. Head to the Internet and go to this link: http://randomdepth.blogspot.com/2006/05/ray-of-sunshine.html#links
(Or if you are reading this on the class website, click the link.) The article gives you instructions as to how to write the letter.
This needs to be typed and double-spaced in letter format. You should also try to track down their address, because I want you, after we have revised and corrected the letter, to mail the letter. So spend some time with this.
