Description is frequently used in technical writing. You will often be asked to describe something (processes, systems, objects) for a reader.
An example of a description of an object might look like this:
The geek is a side-show performer who, while having no physical deformity, becomes a "freak" by biting the heads off of live chickens. (Definition) The geek is usually male, of a relatively young age, from a disadvantaged background. Geeks usually present an extreme appearance. (Extended Definition, physical characteristics) Geeks usually serve to attract thrill seeking adolescent males to the "side-show" or "freak show" setting. They appeal to the "maximum gross-out" crowd. In many side-shows, the geeks serve to engender repeat business through word of mouth advertising (Functions).
While a description of a process might look like this:
The bribing of officials generally determines whether or not a project is funded by the Pakistani government. (End Goal) The person in charge of bribery determines the appropriate officials and, quietly, inquires about the cost of their services. Even though bribery is an accepted part of the culture, it is important that it not be made obvious as the official must maintain "face."(Process and Quality of Action) If the bribe is accepted, the project is usually funded within days. (Effect of Action).
